Habits That Get You Whiter Teeth

Who wouldn't want to have whiter teeth? Having a set of white, shiny teeth makes you feel confident when you interact with others. It also affects the way those you interact with perceive you. Shiny White teeth are often looked at as a sign of youth, success, and attractiveness, while the opposite is true for dirty, stained teeth.

Fortunately for you, there are many things you can do that will help you get whiter teeth and improve your overall oral health. Let's take a look at some of these.

Tips for whiter teeth

1. Brush twice daily

Brushing is a good way to keep stains and discoloration at bay. When you eat or drink, bacteria inside your mouth convert the carbohydrates inside them into acids that can eat away at your enamel. These food particles eventually harden and turn into tartar, which gives your teeth a yellowish tint. By brushing twice a day, you remove most food particles on your teeth before they convert into acids. Use a toothpaste with anti-tartar properties and a whitening agent for best results.

2. Avoid foods with strong coloring agents

Nothing stains your teeth faster than food items that contain strong coloring agents. If you want whiter teeth, stay away from foods and beverages like coffee, tea, sodas, and tomato sauce. If you must have some of these things, rinse your mouth with water immediately after you finish.

3. Get your teeth whitened

The fastest way to get whiter teeth is by going to your dentist for a professional whitening treatment. Sure, there are lots of whitening products you can purchase at your local supermarket, but your dentist has access to much more powerful bleaching agents and whiteners. Your dentist also has special lights that can be used to activate the active ingredients in these bleaching agents. You will have visibly whiter teeth after a single whitening session with your dentist.

4. Get professional cleanings twice a year

A professional dental cleaning twice a year is essential for whiter teeth and good oral health. Regardless of how well you take care of your teeth, tartar will eventually build up over time. During a dental cleaning, your dentist will scrape tartar off your teeth using a metal tool and a high vibration device.

Afterward, your teeth are polished, and a fluoride treatment is applied to protect your teeth for months. Your dentist will also conduct a full examination of the cleaning and address any other issue he/she finds with your teeth.

5. Get cosmetic dentistry when necessary

It is still possible to end up with discolored teeth even if you take proper care of your mouth. For example, we cannot remove certain types of stains and discoloration with whitening or cleanings. If this is the case for you, contact a dentist so that you can explore what the best solutions are. Crowns and veneers are two solutions that are often used to address stains and discoloration on your teeth.

If the patient has existing bonding or other dental enhancements, we can help whiten areas and find ways to improve restorations.

If you have any staining in inner layers on your teeth from medications or fluoride use, we will have to discuss other ways to improve the color of your teeth outside of our normal bleaching techniques. Before we begin your profession teeth whitening process, we will give your teeth a thorough cleaning and checkup to remove any surface stains that may get in the way of our bleaching techniques. Other good candidates are people who are generally unhappy with the current appearance of their teeth.

How It Works

Our teeth whitening services from our Plano dental office work incredibly well and far better than anything you can buy in the store. This is because we start with a professional-grade solution. Most of the products you buy in the store will only remove the surface stains on your teeth. This is fantastic if you've been doing something like drinking a lot of colored juices lately. However, if your teeth are dark, stained, or yellow because of years of taking antibiotics, drinking your daily latte, or even smoking, there's a good chance that the stains and discoloration you suffer from are well inside your teeth. In this case, simply removing the surface decay will do nothing more than brighten your teeth. They won't actually change them back to a beautiful shade of white. However, our solution operates differently.

Our professional-grade teeth whitening solution penetrates the surface of your enamel and begins to target the molecules inside your teeth. Through the process of oxidization, the molecules inside your teeth will begin to reflect less light and appear colorless. This is what gives them their bright and white appearance. In this way, we are actually able to make your teeth whiter than they have ever been before. It is common for our patients to have their teeth become eight shades or more white in time for their wedding day. All you need to do is call and schedule an appointment for our teeth whitening services in Plano.

Learn About Professional Teeth Whitening Brands

Teeth WhiteningIf you want information on professional teeth whitening brands, we encourage you to call and schedule an appointment. Things are changing all the time with companies releasing new and improved products. Visiting our office allows us to provide you with the latest updates. Still, there are a few things you should know about whitening your teeth before you do so.

The Process

When you whiten your teeth, you can do so using an at-home whitening kit or with laser whitening. We recommend using the at-home kit. Regardless of how you whiten your teeth, the solution will typically contain some level of peroxide. The type of peroxide in the solution and its chemical makeup, in general, will influence how effective it is for whitening teeth. Most products you buy in the store will only remove the surface stains on your teeth. While they will make your teeth look better, they will not turn yellow teeth bright white. On the other hand, a professional-grade whitening solution penetrates the enamel and begins the process of oxidization. This is where the molecules inside your teeth begin to reflect less light and appear colorless. Your smile will look bright white as a result, and your teeth will no longer be yellow. This is the type of solution we use in our office.

The Application

When comparing professional teeth whitening brands, you should also consider how the solution is applied to the teeth. Some whitening kits have you brush on the solution using a pen, but the results from this are not significant because the solution will not remain on your teeth long enough. Whitening strips are a better option, but they can still slip out of place, and many people find them to be inconvenient. We recommend you use a kit that uses whitening trays. This way, a solution is placed in the trays for you to then secure around your teeth and wear for thirty minutes or so. The only challenge with this option is that if you buy a kit from the store, the trays will not be designed for your teeth, but for anyone who buys the products. This creates a risk of leakage or the trays slipping out of place. For this reason, we suggest you use professional teeth whitening brands sold by our office. We will begin by having you come in for an appointment, where we make an impression of your teeth. Using that impression, we will then create customized trays designed to fit you perfectly. As a result, the whitening solution will remain in place, not leak out, and the process will be entirely comfortable. Simultaneously, since the solution is professional-grade, you will see the best possible results.

American Dental Association Recommendations for Teeth Whitening for Sensitive Teeth

Teeth WhiteningIf you suffer from sensitive teeth, you can still have a professional teeth whitening treatment.  Many people make the easy mistake of thinking that if their teeth are irritated at times, they won’t be able to improve the appearance of their teeth cosmetically.  Understandable as this is, the American Dental Association has conducted some research that addresses this issue. In the ADA’s findings, patients that used a toothpaste containing potassium nitrate for a few weeks prior to the treatment, and afterwards for as long as necessary, had decreased sensitivity and were able to have their teeth whitened without discomfort.  Those with more severe sensitive teeth, they found, could benefit by having potassium nitrate placed into whitening trays and directly onto the teeth for thirty minutes prior to starting the procedure.  This simple step can be completed by a dentist and shouldn’t be done at home.  However, this is perfectly safe when handled by a dentist.

The ADA’s recommendations are incredibly simple, highlighting how non-invasive a teeth whitening procedure really is.  We have found that those who complain of sensitivity after whitening teeth, typically have used an over the counter solution.  There are specific risk factors involved with this that you don’t get when visiting our office.  For example, there is the risk of the bleaching agent being placed in a cavity or on an infected tooth.  Since it is difficult for people to self-diagnose oral health problems, many people will start the treatment without realizing there is an issue that must be corrected first. This risk is eliminated when having the procedure completed professionally because we always examine and inspect your teeth and gums before getting started.  This way if any health issues are present, we can treat them first.

Another reason that people suffer from sensitivity after whitening is overuse.  This is fairly common with over the counter solutions because the bleaching agent isn’t as strong.  While counterintuitive, when people aren’t satisfied with the results, they tend to repeat the procedure or do so more often.  This poses a problem because how much bleach you put on your teeth should be limited and not repeated more than every quarter. Fortunately, having teeth whitened professionally delivers dramatic results so that there is no need to constantly repeat the procedure – one time will do just fine.

The only other main risk for sensitivity is that the bleaching agent leaks onto the gums.  This is fairly common with over the counter products as well.  Since the whitening trays bought in a store are a one-size-fits-all style, they don’t fit anyone perfectly.  They are more likely to become loose and slip out of place.  When the whitening solution starts to leak out, it can get onto the gums and cause significant irritation and discomfort.  When completed in our dental office, teeth whitening is entirely comfortable because there is no risk of leakage, overuse, or the solution being placed on top of cavities.  With that in mind, we recommend following the ADA’s suggestions and visiting our office for your whitening procedure.

Teeth Whitening Makes it Possible to Drink Coffee and Wine While Still Having a Bright, White Smile

If you can’t live without your morning cup of coffee, teeth whitening can make sure that your smile looks beautiful anyway. It is common knowledge that drinking coffee, tea, and wine can all stain your teeth. The more you drink the greater risk you are for staining and for your teeth appearing dull and yellow. This can make you appear aged and your smile dull but the problem is most people don’t want to give up their favorite beverage to make their teeth look better. This is understandable because drinking coffee and wine has become part of our American culture. Fortunately, as a cosmetic dentist we can help your teeth to look amazing, anyway. We recommend that you start by brushing your teeth throughout the day at home. This will prevent a lot of stains from settling in, as will drinking water. Next, you should have your teeth cleaned professionally twice a year. We can use this time to remove any surface stains along with plaque and bacteria that have settled onto your teeth. This will make teeth look refreshed and brighter, naturally.

Next, try our professional teeth whitening procedure. This is an excellent way to remove years of stains and damaged caused by what you eat and drink. We can whiten teeth by up to eight shades which can take years off your appearance and make it seem like the pots of coffee and bottles of merlot never happened. There are two main types of dental whitening procedures: in-office and take home whitening trays. The in-office procedure can be done in one setting but requires making an appointment. On the other hand, once your custom whitening trays have been created, you can use them at home whenever you want which means that you can brighten teeth anytime – anywhere. Both solutions are extremely effective and produce dramatic results.

You can also try over the counter solutions that can be bought at a drug store. We don’t recommend these as much because they simply don’t work as well and can cause discomfort. They typically only whiten teeth by around two shades, so the results don’t make as large of a difference. The biggest challenge with something bought at the drug store is that the fit is not customized for your mouth. This can lead to the whitening solution leaking out of the trays and onto your gums which in turn, leads to sensitivity or pain. You won’t have this problem when working with the dentist because everything is created specifically for your mouth so the fit will be perfect, and you won’t experience any discomfort.

If your teeth don’t respond as well as you like to a teeth whitening procedures, you can try dental veneers instead. Veneers are a thin shell that is placed on top of your existing teeth and are made out of ceramic or porcelain. This is a stain resistant material that won’t absorb the stains from your coffee, wine, or anything else that you may eat or drink.

How Teeth Whitening is Connected to Your Success at Work

Teeth WhiteningScience has found a link between teeth whitening and a person’s overall attractiveness and success. The results indicate that a beautiful smile makes a person more attractive, overall. British universities Leeds and Central Lancaster studied this concept by taking photos of models and Photoshopping them to make their teeth yellow and unevenly spaced. They then showed the photos to a group of men and women and found that people with white and evenly spaced teeth were found to be more attractive and thought to be healthier. A study conducted by Oral-B took this concept further. They polled 2,000 people and found out that when a person was considered to have a beautiful smile they were thought to be 20% more attractive than their peers. In essence, a beautiful white smile directly impacts how people view you. The reason this is relevant is that the University of California conducted a study to find out if being attractive influenced a person’s success at work. The answer is that yes; the more attractive a person is, the more successful they may be, statistically speaking. In fact, attractive people made 12% more money than their peers. There is a clear financial motivation for making sure that you have a beautiful smile.

The good news is that a beautiful smile is only an appointment away. As a dentist, we provide teeth whitening services for patients that want bright white teeth or want to look younger. Both can be accomplished with relative ease. During the first appointment, we take a mold of the patient’s mouth and use it to have custom teeth whitening trays created in a lab. They are plastic and will fit securely around a patient’s teeth so that they will not become loose when worn. This is extremely important because if they don’t fit correctly, the whitening solution can leak out which is uncomfortable.

With the trays complete, we provide patients with a whitening solution that can be used at home. The trays should be worn for a couple of hours every night for a week or so. During this time, teeth will progressively become whiter until they reach the patient’s desired shade of white. A benefit to this procedure is that the patient remains in control over how white their teeth become. If they look white enough, the procedure can be stopped. If not, the trays can be used longer. Once done, the trays can be used over and over again. This provides patients with the flexibility to whiten their teeth as often as they need to. Those that are looking for a faster solution can try our in-office teeth whitening procedure where teeth are whitened in under 90 minutes. Based on the research conducted by the University of California, professionals should do this on a regular basis.

As a dentist, we remind patients that a beautiful smile starts with a healthy one. No matter how white a person’s teeth are if they are infected they won’t remain beautiful. In fact, oral infections and gum disease can even lead to tooth loss. We recommend that patients have their teeth cleaned at least twice a year so that they can stay in good oral health and keep a gorgeous looking smile.
