How Can a Dentist Near Me Improve My Smile?

dentist201710

My smile is unattractive, and I need a dentist near me to improve it. Can you help?

Yes, we can. As a cosmetic dentist office in Plano, we can transform your smile into something truly stunning. Regardless of whether you have missing teeth causing your angst or you have never enjoyed your smile, we can address each issue and create a smile you are truly proud of.

We recommend to visit our office so we can carefully examine the teeth, take X-rays, and discuss factors of the smile that the individual wants to change. That will allow us to create a treatment plan that identifies what needs to change and the priority in which to address each factor. Keep in mind that we focus on both the patient's oral health and the aesthetics of the smile. Thus, any solutions we use will work to maintain or improve the patient's health and appearance.

What are some of the ways a dentist near me can fix my smile?

Upon visiting our dental office, we will determine which procedures the patient needs and then provide the information regarding how to fix the smile. A few of our more frequently used solutions are:

Teeth whitening

Almost everyone suffers from stained or yellow teeth at some point in their lifetime, which is why teeth whitening is incredibly popular. Adults of all ages can benefit from this simple and easy procedure that can remove the dark stains that can make teeth look old, damaged, or unhealthy. By brightening and whitening the teeth, the patient will notice that he or she looks younger and better right away.

Dental veneers

A popular solution, dental veneers are a porcelain shell bonded to the surface of the teeth. When smiling, the dental veneers will show instead of the natural teeth. This makes it possible to close gaps, change the shape or size of the teeth, cover dark stains that will not go away, and even make crooked teeth appear straight.

Dental crowns

Anytime an individual suffers significant dental damage or loss of enamel, then he or she is likely to need dental crowns. We can create dental crowns in tooth-colored materials and bond them to the tooth. Dental crowns make it possible to continue using the tooth without causing more pain.

Dental implants

The best way to replace missing teeth, implants are durable and strong but look just like natural teeth. This is a modern revolution when it comes to dentistry, and our patients have been greatly pleased with how their smile looks and functions afterward.

Dental bonding

A fast way to restore a slightly damaged tooth, the bonding material can be placed in one visit to our office. This non-invasive restoration can look natural but is ideal for anyone who does not have a great deal of time to spend at the dentist.

Get an Aesthetically Pleasing Smile From a Cosmetic Dentist

cosmetic-dentist20178

If you desire a more aesthetically pleasing smile, visit our cosmetic dentist office for any work you need. We believe that the balanced combination of advanced dental technology, along with our experienced and artistic touch, can offer you the flawless smile you want. Cosmetic dentistry improves and preserves your smile, keeping it young and beautiful for years to come.

Cosmetic Dentist Treatments

  • Teeth Whitening: Our teeth whitening process uses advanced bleaching agents to whiten teeth to their original or a whiter shade. These materials will remove any stains and discoloration. When patients visit, we will use a shading chart to determine which color is the right choice.
  • Dental Bonding: During dental bonding, our cosmetic dentist will apply a tooth-colored resin to certain areas of your teeth to improve coloring, fill in gaps or chips, or cover cracks. After application, the bonding will be cured to a hardened finish and shaped to look natural with the other teeth.
  • Teeth Contouring: Using our advanced dental tools, we will gently shape the enamel of poorly structured teeth to improve their appearance. We will seal off any vulnerable areas following the shaping.
  • Veneers: Our dental veneers are thin, porcelain shells that cover imperfections on visible teeth. We will cement them to the front of teeth for a permanent improvement to discolored, crooked, or poorly shaped teeth. Veneers can also help with gap issues.
  • Dental Bridges: We will anchor the dental bridges will in place by two crowns that cover the abutment teeth. A realistic-looking dental prosthetic will go in the gap from the missing tooth and attach to the crowned teeth for permanency.
  • Dental Implants: Our dental implants are our most permanent replacement option. The implant is a titanium rod placed into the jawbone in the space left by the missing tooth. The titanium and bone will fuse together for a secure false root. A tooth-colored prosthetic will be attached to the artificial root for a natural-looking replacement that will last forever.
  • Smile Makeovers: Our cosmetic dentist smile makeovers involve a combination of these services to give you the flawless smile you desire. A smile makeover may require a few visits to our office to acquire the best results.

Candidates for these cosmetic dentist improvements include people with good dental health and regular checkups who wish to improve their smile drastically. If you have existing dental problems like cavities or infections, we will address and fix these issues before we attempt to improve the appearance of your smile. Your proper dental health is more important than cosmetic improvements. Without good oral hygiene, your improvements will not offer you the long-lasting and attractive results you want. To learn more about improving your smile, come into our Plano cosmetic dentist office for a consultation.

Why You Should Visit a Professional Teeth Whitening Dentist

Teeth WhiteningThere are many reasons why you should visit a professional teeth whitening dentist, the main ones being safety and efficiency. Before you decide to whiten your teeth, you should discuss the risks and time frame it may take to get the results you want with a dentist. When you whiten at home with store-bought products, you risk tooth sensitivity and enamel and root damage. Texas Dental Specialists can help you determine what the risks are surrounding your individual teeth and what whitening system is best for your needs.

Why a professional teeth whitening dentist?

We can help to alleviate sensitivity as the patient whitens his or her teeth by recommending certain desensitizing toothpaste designed for vulnerable teeth. We can also check for discreet signs of root damage that could be the result of tooth whitening or other care regimens. We can treat any existing conditions that may be inhibiting the ability to whiten the teeth quickly and effectively. We increase the patient's teeth whitening success rate.

We can determine if the staining is caused by general wear and surface stains or by underlying issues that need to be addressed and fixed. These issues can include periodontal disease, smoking or silver-lined fillings. If the patient has existing bonding or other dental enhancements, we can help whiten areas and find ways to improve restorations.

Who is a good candidate for teeth whitening?

People whose teeth have naturally become stained due to eating and drinking are excellent candidates for teeth whitening. If you have any staining in inner layers on your teeth from medications or fluoride use, we will have to discuss other ways to improve the color of your teeth outside of our normal bleaching techniques. Before we begin your profession teeth whitening process, we will give your teeth a thorough cleaning and checkup to remove any surface stains that may get in the way of our bleaching techniques. Other good candidates are people who are generally unhappy with the current appearance of their teeth.

If one is considering cosmetic improvements for his or her teeth, then one needs to first pursue visiting a professional teeth whitening dentist. A teeth whitening is sometimes all patients need to greatly improve their smiles. A professional whitening will result in amazing results that brighten the entire smile.

Are the costs of professional teeth whitening reasonable?

Teeth whitening is one of the most affordable ways to improve your smile. Many people opt to whiten their teeth rather than having other more expensive improvements made. Our convenient in-office or at-home whitening treatments can give you immediate results that continue to develop with longer use. Instead of spending money on teeth whitening toothpaste and store-bought products, visit a professional to have your whitening implemented correctly at a reasonable price.

Before you visit a professional teeth whitening dentist for a bleaching, you should consider your oral health habits. Are you brushing and flossing your teeth like you should and visiting a dentist twice a year? Even when you have your teeth whitened, you need to maintain these healthy oral hygiene habits in order to elongate your whitened results. Visit our Plano office today for more information.

There's nothing more exciting than getting ready for this special day. A wedding is a celebration of two people who are about to begin a new journey together; a magical moment between two people in front of all their friends and family. Our Teeth Whitening Services Are Convenient

When it comes to improving your smile, you may harbor concerns that it is going to take a significant financial investment or a large amount of time on your part. When planning for a wedding, these are two things you may not have allocated toward your smile. We understand that you're busy picking the wedding venue, tasting different cake recipes, and trying to decide who to put on the guest list. This takes a great deal of time, effort, and concentration; we get it. This is why we believe teeth whitening is something that every bride or groom should put on their agenda. It doesn't require much effort on your part. It doesn't require a great amount of time. And it is incredibly affordable. These are all reasons to put this on your to-do list and be confident knowing that it's going to be easy for you to get it done. This is truly a no-stress solution for improving your appearance and your smile.

How It Works

Our teeth whitening services from our Plano dental office work incredibly well and far better than anything you can buy in the store. This is because we start with a professional-grade solution. Most of the products you buy in the store will only remove the surface stains on your teeth. This is fantastic if you've been doing something like drinking a lot of colored juices lately. However, if your teeth are dark, stained, or yellow because of years of taking antibiotics, drinking your daily latte, or even smoking, there's a good chance that the stains and discoloration you suffer from are well inside your teeth. In this case, simply removing the surface decay will do nothing more than brighten your teeth. They won't actually change them back to a beautiful shade of white. However, our solution operates differently.

Our professional-grade teeth whitening solution penetrates the surface of your enamel and begins to target the molecules inside your teeth. Through the process of oxidization, the molecules inside your teeth will begin to reflect less light and appear colorless. This is what gives them their bright and white appearance. In this way, we are actually able to make your teeth whiter than they have ever been before. It is common for our patients to have their teeth become eight shades or more white in time for their wedding day. All you need to do is call and schedule an appointment for our teeth whitening services in Plano.

Still, many people call asking if cosmetic dentistry is really any different from regular dentistry and what we can do to help them. We understand that there is a great deal of confusion surrounding what we can and cannot do, which is why we focus on patient education.

Bottom line: As a cosmetic dentist, we can give you a beautiful smile and correct most aesthetic problems you have with your smile. How we do so and what the exact results will be, depend on the condition of your teeth right now.

Ways a Cosmetic Dentist Can Help You:

  • Whiten your teeth and remove deep stains
  • Make crooked teeth appear straighter
  • Change the shape or size of your teeth

A few of the ways we do so is with:

  • Dental bonding. For a fast restoration, we can place bonding material on the surface of your tooth, shape, and harden it. This is an excellent solution if you have a cracked or chipped tooth that needs to be fixed immediately.
  • Dental veneers. Our patients love dental veneers because they can solve virtually all aesthetic issues. They can cover dark stains, close gaps in between teeth, change their shape and size, and create a truly stunning Hollywood-style smile.
  • Dental crowns. When teeth are more severely damaged or much of the enamel is missing, a crown can be placed around the tooth instead. A crown is a cap created using tooth-colored porcelain or ceramic. It works incredibly well when your tooth structure is missing.

Why You Should See an Invisalign Dentist

Invisalign DentistAn experienced Invisalign dentist can transform your smile into something straight and beautiful, without anyone knowing you are having a dental procedure completed. The best thing about this process is that your teeth can be straightened using a clear device that is unnoticeable and inconspicuous. This is ideal for busy professionals, teens, or those concerned over how metal braces could impact their appearance.

In order to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure, schedule a dental exam and consultation. Our team of professionals will evaluate your teeth, gums, and jaw to determine if Invisalign will accomplish the goals that you have for your smile and your dental health. Patients that have a misaligned jaw may still need traditional metal braces in order to correct it.

The Process

An Invisalign dentist will create a treatment plan that takes you from where your teeth are today to completely straight and gorgeous, using clear aligners.  An aligner looks like a clear retainer. It completely surrounds your teeth, and patients are typically provided one for both the upper and lower teeth. To start, a mold will be taken of your mouth.  In the lab, aligners will be produced for your entire treatment plan. Each aligner takes your teeth one step closer to being straight.

At home, you will switch out the aligner every couple of weeks. This will keep your teeth moving in the right direction, without requiring constant visits to the orthodontist. Since this is done on your own time, scheduling follow up appointments becomes much easier.

The aligner is supposed to be worn for around 22 hours a day.  This leaves time to enjoy a special dinner out, brush your teeth, and eat your favorite caramel apple. One of the benefits of Invisalign is that you have the freedom to take the aligner out, instead of being stuck with braces regardless of the occasion. In addition, your teeth will look straighter throughout the process, helping your appearance to improve immediately.

While you are straightening your teeth, it is important to practice good oral health care at home.  Brush your teeth twice a day, use floss, and an antiseptic mouthwash to kill bacteria. You can also brush your aligner with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste. Visit your Invisalign dentist for regular teeth cleanings to remove any additional bacteria that may form in your mouth. This will help to prevent cavities and gum disease while keeping your teeth healthy for the procedure.  Since the aligner is replaced every couple of weeks there is less risk of it carrying infection causing bacteria, as well.

An Invisalign dentist can do wonders for your smile and help you to look positively radiant.  As your teeth continue to straighten, you will notice changes and improvements to your appearance.  We also recommend that patients have their teeth whitened as part of their big reveal. We offer professional teeth whitening services that can whiten your smile by up to eight shades. Once the process is complete, you will be delighted with your bright, straight smile.

Teeth Whitening:

We offer in-office and at-home whitening solutions that range in effectiveness and simplicity. A simple teeth whitening cosmetic dentist can provide you with surprising results.

Dental Bonding:

If you have chipped or cracked teeth or a single discolored tooth, we can provide you with dental bonding, which covers injured teeth and imperfections with a malleable solution that is permanently hardened after being placed in the correct area. This option will quickly and easily fix small dental imperfections.

Dental Contouring:

Dental contouring can be employed to align and reshape crooked or misshapen teeth. We will gently buff areas of each tooth to create a more attractively shaped structure.
White Fillings: If you have metallic fillings and would like a tooth-colored update, we can remove your dated fillings and replace them with a more attractive option. Our white fillings will blend in with your tooth color perfectly and look natural when you smile.
Dental Veneers: Our veneers are thin, porcelain shells bonded to the fronts of your teeth. They effectively cover discolored, misshapen, and oddly spaced teeth and also improve the look of jagged or chipped teeth edges. Veneers are customized for your individual needs and attractively cover dental flaws, improving your appearance drastically.

Dental Implants:

If you have missing teeth, you should consider receiving our dental implants instead of getting traditional dentures. Dental implants last forever, look and feel more natural, and are created to match surrounding teeth. Our implants are planted into your jawbone for a permanent foundation.
Dental Bridges: If you don't want a removable dental replacement, but prefer to avoid the cost and procedure of dental implants, dental bridges are an excellent option. A fabricated tooth is held in a gap by two crowns placed over abutment teeth. This is a more permanent option than dentures and provides a natural looking replacement.

These are only a few of our most common cosmetic dentist can improve the appearance and health of your teeth. Learn About Professional Teeth Whitening Brands

Teeth WhiteningIf you want information on professional teeth whitening brands, we encourage you to call and schedule an appointment. Things are changing all the time with companies releasing new and improved products. Visiting our office allows us to provide you with the latest updates. Still, there are a few things you should know about whitening your teeth before you do so.

The Process

When you whiten your teeth, you can do so using an at-home whitening kit or with laser whitening. We recommend using the at-home kit. Regardless of how you whiten your teeth, the solution will typically contain some level of peroxide. The type of peroxide in the solution and its chemical makeup, in general, will influence how effective it is for whitening teeth. Most products you buy in the store will only remove the surface stains on your teeth. While they will make your teeth look better, they will not turn yellow teeth bright white. On the other hand, a professional-grade whitening solution penetrates the enamel and begins the process of oxidization. This is where the molecules inside your teeth begin to reflect less light and appear colorless. Your smile will look bright white as a result, and your teeth will no longer be yellow. This is the type of solution we use in our office.

The Application

When comparing professional teeth whitening brands, you should also consider how the solution is applied to the teeth. Some whitening kits have you brush on the solution using a pen, but the results from this are not significant because the solution will not remain on your teeth long enough. Whitening strips are a better option, but they can still slip out of place, and many people find them to be inconvenient. We recommend you use a kit that uses whitening trays. This way, a solution is placed in the trays for you to then secure around your teeth and wear for thirty minutes or so. The only challenge with this option is that if you buy a kit from the store, the trays will not be designed for your teeth, but for anyone who buys the products. This creates a risk of leakage or the trays slipping out of place. For this reason, we suggest you use professional teeth whitening brands sold by our office. We will begin by having you come in for an appointment, where we make an impression of your teeth. Using that impression, we will then create customized trays designed to fit you perfectly. As a result, the whitening solution will remain in place, not leak out, and the process will be entirely comfortable. Simultaneously, since the solution is professional-grade, you will see the best possible results.

Visit a Cosmetic Dentist for the Health of Your Gums

Cosmetic DentistryFor cosmetic dentistry, how your teeth look is equally as important as how well they function. Cosmetic dentistry as a whole is largely focused on the aesthetics of the mouth, and so we have honed our skills to ensure that you have the brightest, whitest smile possible. Our techniques allow for straighter teeth that build confident, radiant smiles. At the same time, there is a significant amount of cross treatment. Replacing a lost tooth with a dental implant, for example, helps with the overall health of the jawbone. However, most people simply associate us with the techniques that have become our everyday staple. These include teeth whitening, replacement of lost enamel with dental crowns or ceramic veneers, replacing lost teeth with dentures, bridges, and dental implants, and straightening your teeth using braces or Invisalign®.

Apart from the techniques that we use on a daily basis there are a number of other, less well known, procedures that also help to improve a persons' appearance. What we have found is quite a few of the procedures that are done for medical and dental health reasons also have aesthetic implications.

If you are someone that has not considered the benefits of visiting a cosmetic dentistry, it is important to understand that we do perform the dental work required to keep your teeth in good health.  However, we do so in a way that improves the appearance of your teeth at the same time.  It is not necessary to only treat the health of your teeth or to only deal with their appearance.  When you visit our dental office, you can receive the benefits of both in one treatment. For example, one of the ways we can keep you healthy is by performing restorations.  If your tooth becomes even slightly cracked, it is likely to become infected, creating discomfort for you and leading to the potential need for a root canal.  By restoring the tooth using a solution like bonding, veneers or crowns, we can protect your tooth while improving its appearance.  When you visit our office, you can be confident that once the restoration has been completed, it will look so natural that you will not be able to tell the difference between your natural teeth and the newly improved ones.

A perfect example of how a cosmetic dentist can improve your appearance and your health is the dental crown.  We can place dental crowns around your tooth or teeth to protect them.  If you have suffered from enamel erosion, this procedure can make it possible to eat without feeling sensitivity.  Simultaneously, a dental crown can be used to close gaps in between teeth, cover dark stains, and make changes to their overall shape and size.  This one solution can be used to help you feel healthier, protect your teeth, and to improve the way that they look.  All of this is possible when you visit our cosmetic dentist office.  The crowns we create will be made using a tooth-colored material so that they blend in and improve the way that you look, instead of standing out.  If you think that your tooth is infected, or you are suffering from sensitivity, we encourage you to visit our dental office and discuss what you do not like about your appearance at the same time so that we can address both issues.

Learn More About Cosmetic Dentistry for Crooked Teeth

Cosmetic DentistryIf you have a crooked smile, you should look into cosmetic dentistry for crooked teeth. It is easy to assume braces are the only choice, but when you do not want to put the time and finances into such a treatment, you may be interested in learning about other options. With our cosmetic dentistry for crooked teeth, two of our most common treatments for patients who dislike their teeth are tooth contouring and dental veneers.

What is tooth contouring?

Tooth contouring and reshaping treatment is one of the most affordable routes for fixing crooked teeth. It works best on patients with specific teeth that stick out or are clearly misplaced. During our tooth contouring process, we use special shaping tools to scrape off and buff certain portions of dental enamel in order to create a more attractively shaped tooth. Those that have enamel removed will be sealed with a bonding material to protect it from decay, sensitivity, and damage. In some cases, we might even use our state-of-the-art laser sculpting techniques. Our tooth contouring will allow your teeth to fit together in a more attractive manner and also provide a better flossing ground for your at-home dental care.

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers, or porcelain veneers, are one of our most popular treatments, not just for improving crooked teeth, but also for fixing alignment issues and poorly shaped and discolored teeth. Our dental veneers are applied to the tooth fronts with a strong dental glue. They are thin, tooth-colored shells that will rest comfortably on your teeth and feel natural once placed. Depending on the state of your teeth, veneers may require part of your tooth to be shaped to allow for a flatter resting surface. Our dental veneers can be created and placed in two appointments, and provide immediate results. Veneers are also more affordable than most traditional straightening methods.

Is cosmetic dentistry for crooked teeth painful?

No matter which procedure you choose, we will make sure you are completely comfortable before we start working. We will provide the necessary anesthetics so you do not experience any discomfort during or following your treatment. Both of these treatments are minimally invasive, so they will not take long or cause discomfort.

Do you provide any other forms of cosmetic dentistry for crooked teeth?

Yes. Our crowns are another common option for crooked teeth that stand out. We can place a crown over a misshaped tooth that will give it a whiter and straighter appearance. When you visit our office for cosmetic dentistry for crooked teeth, we can go over a few other commonly used options as well.

Come and visit our cosmetic dentistry for crooked teeth. Don't settle for time-consuming straightening treatments that will require constant orthodontic visits and may cause discomfort after every adjustment. We can give you the attractive, long-lasting results you've always wanted, in a short amount of time.

Orthodontics and Retention: What You Need to Know

orthodonticsOrthodontics treatments like braces and aligners work to straighten your incorrectly positioned teeth. The results you receive from alignment methods will be strong and attractive; however, teeth have a tendency to move consistently based on their environment and their natural position. To avoid the retraction of quality corrections, we employ retention methods.  What is retention? Orthodontic retention serves as a support system to newly aligned teeth. Once your braces or your aligner is removed, the use of retention for a short period is necessary to preserve your straightened results. If you previously had severely misshapen teeth or bite issues, retention will help your teeth hold their corrected position. Even if your dental misalignment was minor, your teeth might still need extra support to maintain your straight smile. Directly following the removal of braces or aligners, your teeth are most prone to shifting back into their original place. The retention phase of orthodontics will stop this from happening.

How long will retention be necessary?

The duration of your retention phase will greatly depend on the state of your teeth before the orthodontics treatment and how quickly your straightening changes were accomplished. While some patients' teeth are more prone to moving than others, in most cases, you should wear a retainer certain times of the day or night for at least a year or two for the best stabilization results.

What will my retention plan look like?

Your plan will be created personally for you, so there is no way to determine before an examination what your exact retention plan will look like. There are many factors we will consider when creating your plan and if you choose to wear your retainer as often as possible, you will gain the best results. Over a few months to a year, we will gradually permit you to wear your retainer less often until eventually we decide you don't need to wear it any longer or that you only need it a few times a week.

What types of retention will be used?

The type of orthodontics retention, you will use will depend on the nature of your teeth. We use either a fixed retainer or a removable retainer depending on the patient. Two of the most common retainers we offer are lower fixed retainers, which uses a wire fixed to the inside of your bottom row of teeth, or an upper removable retainer, which can be in the form of a plastic shell or a removable wire. Retainers that include the use of a bonded wire or removable wire generally produce the most long-lasting results, but they often require longer wear periods.

How do I care for my retainer?

If you have a removable retainer, you should rinse it with warm water and mild soap whenever you brush your teeth to keep the buildup at bay. You should always keep your removable retainer in a safe place when you are not using it to prevent breaking or warping. If you have a fixed retainer, you just care for your teeth as usual. If you notice any bending or breaking, let our orthodontics office know immediately so we can fix it.

American Dental Association Recommendations for Teeth Whitening for Sensitive Teeth

Teeth WhiteningIf you suffer from sensitive teeth, you can still have a professional teeth whitening treatment.  Many people make the easy mistake of thinking that if their teeth are irritated at times, they won’t be able to improve the appearance of their teeth cosmetically.  Understandable as this is, the American Dental Association has conducted some research that addresses this issue. In the ADA’s findings, patients that used a toothpaste containing potassium nitrate for a few weeks prior to the treatment, and afterwards for as long as necessary, had decreased sensitivity and were able to have their teeth whitened without discomfort.  Those with more severe sensitive teeth, they found, could benefit by having potassium nitrate placed into whitening trays and directly onto the teeth for thirty minutes prior to starting the procedure.  This simple step can be completed by a dentist and shouldn’t be done at home.  However, this is perfectly safe when handled by a dentist.

The ADA’s recommendations are incredibly simple, highlighting how non-invasive a teeth whitening procedure really is.  We have found that those who complain of sensitivity after whitening teeth, typically have used an over the counter solution.  There are specific risk factors involved with this that you don’t get when visiting our office.  For example, there is the risk of the bleaching agent being placed in a cavity or on an infected tooth.  Since it is difficult for people to self-diagnose oral health problems, many people will start the treatment without realizing there is an issue that must be corrected first. This risk is eliminated when having the procedure completed professionally because we always examine and inspect your teeth and gums before getting started.  This way if any health issues are present, we can treat them first.

Another reason that people suffer from sensitivity after whitening is overuse.  This is fairly common with over the counter solutions because the bleaching agent isn’t as strong.  While counterintuitive, when people aren’t satisfied with the results, they tend to repeat the procedure or do so more often.  This poses a problem because how much bleach you put on your teeth should be limited and not repeated more than every quarter. Fortunately, having teeth whitened professionally delivers dramatic results so that there is no need to constantly repeat the procedure – one time will do just fine.

The only other main risk for sensitivity is that the bleaching agent leaks onto the gums.  This is fairly common with over the counter products as well.  Since the whitening trays bought in a store are a one-size-fits-all style, they don’t fit anyone perfectly.  They are more likely to become loose and slip out of place.  When the whitening solution starts to leak out, it can get onto the gums and cause significant irritation and discomfort.  When completed in our dental office, teeth whitening is entirely comfortable because there is no risk of leakage, overuse, or the solution being placed on top of cavities.  With that in mind, we recommend following the ADA’s suggestions and visiting our office for your whitening procedure.

The Truth About Teeth Whitening and What You Should Know Before Heading to the Store

Teeth WhiteningThere are many misconceptions about teeth whitening, making it important to know the facts before you schedule a procedure or head to the store.  The procedure you select and where you go to have it done will make a huge difference in how your teeth turn out.  If you are looking for stunning and beautiful teeth, your best bet is to head to the dentist. Here is what you need to know.

Do whitening products at the store actually work? Yes, they do but they typically only whiten teeth by around two shades.  This is far less than how white they get at the dentist office, so many people feel disappointed with the results.  This has created the idea that teeth whitening doesn’t work when it actually does.  The key is to visit the dentist for dramatic results instead of trying to find them at the store.

How white do they get at the dentist office? Teeth will typically get up to eight shades whiter if you have the procedure done at the dentist office.  This is significant, and you will be able to see a major difference in how your teeth and your smile look.  We recommend that anyone with major stains or yellow teeth, have them cleaned and their teeth whitening completed by a professional dentist in order to get the best level of results.

Does it hurt? No, if your teeth are whitened by a dentist, there shouldn’t be any discomfort.  If, however, you purchase trays from the drug store, they can become loose, and the whitening solution can leak which will make your gums hurt.

How is a teeth whitening procedure done? That depends on what type of procedure you get.  At the dentist, you can have them whitened in the office, or you can have custom teeth whitening trays created that can be used at home.  The customized trays have a perfect fit and won’t leak.  They feel great and produce stunning results plus most people like the idea of being able to whiten whenever they want.  If you go the drug store route, you can buy toothpaste, strips, and trays.  They are available for purchase at most stores, but the results aren’t as good overall.

How does it work? There is typically peroxide inside of the whitening solution, and peroxide can penetrate through the enamel and begin the oxidation process.  This turns the molecules inside of your teeth into ones that don’t reflect color and therefore become colorless.  This creates the appearance of bright white teeth.

Should I whiten teeth first or get dental veneers first? That depends. If you are getting veneers placed onto all of your teeth there really isn’t a need to whiten your teeth as the veneers will cover them.  If, however, a dental veneer is being placed onto one or two teeth in order to restore them, you should have your teeth whitened first.  Veneers are resistant to bleaching, so you want your teeth to be the correct shade before having the procedure done.

Teeth Whitening Makes it Possible to Drink Coffee and Wine While Still Having a Bright, White Smile

If you can’t live without your morning cup of coffee, teeth whitening can make sure that your smile looks beautiful anyway. It is common knowledge that drinking coffee, tea, and wine can all stain your teeth. The more you drink the greater risk you are for staining and for your teeth appearing dull and yellow. This can make you appear aged and your smile dull but the problem is most people don’t want to give up their favorite beverage to make their teeth look better. This is understandable because drinking coffee and wine has become part of our American culture. Fortunately, as a cosmetic dentist we can help your teeth to look amazing, anyway. We recommend that you start by brushing your teeth throughout the day at home. This will prevent a lot of stains from settling in, as will drinking water. Next, you should have your teeth cleaned professionally twice a year. We can use this time to remove any surface stains along with plaque and bacteria that have settled onto your teeth. This will make teeth look refreshed and brighter, naturally.

Next, try our professional teeth whitening procedure. This is an excellent way to remove years of stains and damaged caused by what you eat and drink. We can whiten teeth by up to eight shades which can take years off your appearance and make it seem like the pots of coffee and bottles of merlot never happened. There are two main types of dental whitening procedures: in-office and take home whitening trays. The in-office procedure can be done in one setting but requires making an appointment. On the other hand, once your custom whitening trays have been created, you can use them at home whenever you want which means that you can brighten teeth anytime – anywhere. Both solutions are extremely effective and produce dramatic results.

You can also try over the counter solutions that can be bought at a drug store. We don’t recommend these as much because they simply don’t work as well and can cause discomfort. They typically only whiten teeth by around two shades, so the results don’t make as large of a difference. The biggest challenge with something bought at the drug store is that the fit is not customized for your mouth. This can lead to the whitening solution leaking out of the trays and onto your gums which in turn, leads to sensitivity or pain. You won’t have this problem when working with the dentist because everything is created specifically for your mouth so the fit will be perfect, and you won’t experience any discomfort.

If your teeth don’t respond as well as you like to a teeth whitening procedures, you can try dental veneers instead. Veneers are a thin shell that is placed on top of your existing teeth and are made out of ceramic or porcelain. This is a stain resistant material that won’t absorb the stains from your coffee, wine, or anything else that you may eat or drink.

How Teeth Whitening is Connected to Your Success at Work

Teeth WhiteningScience has found a link between teeth whitening and a person’s overall attractiveness and success. The results indicate that a beautiful smile makes a person more attractive, overall. British universities Leeds and Central Lancaster studied this concept by taking photos of models and Photoshopping them to make their teeth yellow and unevenly spaced. They then showed the photos to a group of men and women and found that people with white and evenly spaced teeth were found to be more attractive and thought to be healthier. A study conducted by Oral-B took this concept further. They polled 2,000 people and found out that when a person was considered to have a beautiful smile they were thought to be 20% more attractive than their peers. In essence, a beautiful white smile directly impacts how people view you. The reason this is relevant is that the University of California conducted a study to find out if being attractive influenced a person’s success at work. The answer is that yes; the more attractive a person is, the more successful they may be, statistically speaking. In fact, attractive people made 12% more money than their peers. There is a clear financial motivation for making sure that you have a beautiful smile.

The good news is that a beautiful smile is only an appointment away. As a dentist, we provide teeth whitening services for patients that want bright white teeth or want to look younger. Both can be accomplished with relative ease. During the first appointment, we take a mold of the patient’s mouth and use it to have custom teeth whitening trays created in a lab. They are plastic and will fit securely around a patient’s teeth so that they will not become loose when worn. This is extremely important because if they don’t fit correctly, the whitening solution can leak out which is uncomfortable.

With the trays complete, we provide patients with a whitening solution that can be used at home. The trays should be worn for a couple of hours every night for a week or so. During this time, teeth will progressively become whiter until they reach the patient’s desired shade of white. A benefit to this procedure is that the patient remains in control over how white their teeth become. If they look white enough, the procedure can be stopped. If not, the trays can be used longer. Once done, the trays can be used over and over again. This provides patients with the flexibility to whiten their teeth as often as they need to. Those that are looking for a faster solution can try our in-office teeth whitening procedure where teeth are whitened in under 90 minutes. Based on the research conducted by the University of California, professionals should do this on a regular basis.

As a dentist, we remind patients that a beautiful smile starts with a healthy one. No matter how white a person’s teeth are if they are infected they won’t remain beautiful. In fact, oral infections and gum disease can even lead to tooth loss. We recommend that patients have their teeth cleaned at least twice a year so that they can stay in good oral health and keep a gorgeous looking smile.
